Mandalore was a powerful, complicated world shaped by warrior tradition, clan identity, industry, and generations of conflict. Its people had survived wars, occupations, political upheaval, and periods of uneasy peace. Whatever outsiders believed about Mandalorians, few doubted their ability to endure.
Mandalore the Conqueror emerged as the dominant leader of Mandalore. Then his policy changed with alarming speed. Mandalorian forces became increasingly aggressive beyond their own territory, striking worlds throughout the Outer Rim and bringing Mandalore into direct conflict with the Republic.
To those who watched from outside, the escalation seemed sudden. The reasons behind the Conqueror's transformation remain disputed.
The conflict expanded into open war. Republic forces and Mandalorian armies fought across the Outer Rim as worlds were pulled into a struggle many had never expected. The Republic was already strained, and Mandalorian attacks placed further pressure on its military and political leadership.
Unknown to most of the galaxy, the Republic constructed a weapon capable of devastating Mandalore on an unprecedented scale. Its intended purpose, according to the surviving Republic account, was coercion: demonstrate overwhelming force, compel surrender, and end the war without having to destroy the planet.
The existence of the weapon remained secret until the final days of the conflict.
Faced with the Republic's ultimatum, Mandalore the Conqueror agreed to surrender. Jedi Master Avar Kriss traveled to Mandalore as an emissary of peace, intending to accept that surrender and help bring the war to an end.
For a brief moment, it appeared the catastrophe had been avoided.
Cities vanished. Infrastructure collapsed. Communications died. Entire regions were transformed in moments. Survivors were scattered beneath a ruined world, and countless records of the final hours disappeared with it.

The Republic account maintains that the weapon was intended to force surrender—not annihilate Mandalore after peace had been accepted. Its activation is remembered as a catastrophic failure surrounding a weapon that should never have fired.
For many Mandalorians, the central fact is simpler: Mandalore surrendered, and a Republic weapon fired anyway. Whatever explanation followed could not restore the dead or rebuild the world.
Witnesses died or vanished. Communications failed. Records were destroyed, sealed, or lost. Mandalore became extraordinarily difficult to reach. No complete public account ever established exactly why the weapon activated.
